Slow painting progress…

December 9th, 2011

I’m making very slow progress with my Journeyman league Legion army. The league is 6 weeks long, but our private league is double that (doubling the time schedule), to allow players more time to hobby and game given everyone’s busy schedule.

We, or “they” I should say since I’ve been pretty absent, are on the final, final week – Week 12. I still have not painted any models. I only decided on the final paint scheme earlier this week. Last night, I worked on bases so that my test models can find a “home” and finally be complete. That’s a Stinger and a Shredder, out of 8. Two other test models will need to be repainted. I should photograph the schemes :)

There is one decision change I’m planning… So I went with a darker “ice” carapace theme. Originally, I wanted my beasts to have carapaces of ice! Problem is that I cannot paint ice, so the whole thing fails and the light blue ice armor color clashes with the pale skin. So I went with a darker blue to contrast it to the pale skin.

Then things I consider “spiky growths” I make black. These include non-carapace spike protrusions and claws. I also consider teeth to fall under this category. However, black teeth just looks ugly, so I plan on making them pearly whites, to stand out and look more intimidating. Okay, not pearly whites, but yellowy-whites… with blight… and blood.

Epic Vlad is Epic!!

December 2nd, 2011

Privateer Press’ Insider just revealed the artwork for the new Epic Vlad (aka Epic2 Vlad, Vlad3, unofficially “Legendary” Vlad). It is sweet. Finally the Lord of the Horse Lords gets a horse.

Epic Vlad

If I can keep up with my painting and models, then I will give him priority to field him on the tabletop! I might want to paint up more Uhlans too, cause I can see Vlad retaining the increased FA field allowance bonus from his other epic themed force. Maybe add in another Drakhun!

I don’t know what to expect from the his stats and rules, but I’m giddy from the idea of fielding a Khadoran cavalry army, including the Gun Carriage! Now it would be pure awesome if this Vlad has the “Iron Horse” rule too!!! (Iron Horse confers the Cavalry rule to warjacks.)

Tiny Tower Update!

November 18th, 2011

So some time ago I finally “beat” Tiny Tower. I built every floor type until they didn’t let me build anymore. Each Bitizen is working in their dream job, with a 9 in that job requirement. It took over 1200 Tower Bux to cycle through a residential slot to get that last Bitizen with a 9 for one job – a job at the Game Studio. I thought it was a joke being played on me by the game developers.

During that 1200 Tower Bux bitizen shuffle, I accidentally evicted another 9. However, I was able to refill that job position during my search for that final “Game Studio” job.

So I’ve “beat” the game, short of upgrading floors (which I find hampers Tower Bux earning), but I’m still restocking floors and making Tower Bux and coins, building empty floors, just in case they ever release another Tiny Tower update. Well, today was that day!

In addition to the usual new floor types and costumes, they added some not-so-useful features like stars to indicate how many dream jobs are on that floor. Gifting stock to friends… uh why? For the new feature? Missions??

Missions are an interesting added feature, yet so simple. You simply meet some stocking requirements (eg. 1125 Sea Urchin from the Sushi Place and 1350 Shrimp Platters from Mexican Food) to earn some extra Tower Bux. Even though the demand exceeds that of what your floor can produce, you don’t have to upgrade your floors to meet those demands (thankfully). The mission absorbs whatever stock you have and credits it towards the mission.

Well, this is just something extra to keep the obsessed engaged in the game :P

Metal to Plastic, thinning down my collection

November 17th, 2011

Plugs:

Longest Night Toy Drive Steamroller Event on 11/20/11! Official PP Forum Post

I’ve got stuff to sell! Bartertown Post

So PP previewed their latest plastic kit, the Carnivean/Scythean/Ravagore Legion Heavy Warbeast. It looks really cool and almost identical to their metal counterpart! Now I don’t need to get one, other than to upgrade with the Proteus kit, as I already have 4 Carniveans (2 new-in-box), 2 Scytheans (both NIB) and 2 Ravagores (also both NIB). That’s 6 models that I probably won’t get around to painting soon, if ever.

I’ve been looking over my collection and contemplating what I want to sell and what I want to hold onto, in hopes that I’ll get around to painting them. I could relinquish a large part of my collection to get funds, and re-buy them when I do actually want to use the models… or I can continue to keep them in storage… Anyways, as my bartertown post shows, I’m just selling the excess.

I have 2 painted units of Shocktroopers, none of which I consider “my” army because I bought them painted. The original idea 5 years ago was to buy and use painted models, then replace them as I paint my own. So far, I’ve only replaced the Butcher :P So I decided to stick with these 2 units of Shocktroopers, keep my new plastic unit (courtesy of the new 2-player starter box), and sell my NIB metal ones.

I don’t have the plastic Demo Corps yet, but I have 2 painted full units (also not “mine”) which is enough to tell me to sell the 2 boxes of metal Demo Corps (3 models each).

Add to that my 4th Winterguard Rocketeer, which I accidentally bought thinking I only had 2, when in fact I had 3 already.

Now the plastic Legion heavy… I felt like this was going to “hurt” my potential to sell since I’ve decided to stick with ONE of each metal Scythean and Ravagore instead of two. My Carniveans are both “unboxed”, cleaned and one is modded to have a closed maw. Each retails for close to $46, while the plastic kit will retail for $35.

Yay for plastic! Boo that it’ll hamper my wedding funding.

Oh, I’m also ridding of my Minions “starter”. I don’t need a 5th “someday” faction :P

October Wrap Up

November 2nd, 2011

Busy busy busy.

Journeyman League updates:

Played a 25-pt Journeyman game last night. I simply added 2 more Shredders and a Seraph to my battlebox. That gives Lylyth 2 heavies and 6 lesser warbeasts under her 5-fury control :) Faced off against a Cryx player who’s only played like 4 games before this one. The player has a really good grasp of tactics and strategy, but I was still helping him plenty along the way, including trying to finish Lylyth off before I retaliate against Deneghra. Sadly he brought Lylyth down to 1 with a last desperate attempt (charging his own Bane Knight with a Scrap Thrall and catching Lylyth in the blast). On my turn, my Seraph finished the job.

4 Legion Shredders and 4 Legion Stingers on the painting table, based coated and experimenting with “ice”. My test Stinger didn’t exactly turn out as I had hoped, but it’s good enough! Gotta finish them up and move on!

I have to get a unit (or two) of Retribution Mage Hunter Strike Force assembled so that my friend can use them in our Journeyman league. That’s gonna be tough to accomplish since I’ll be in Vegas this weekend!

NeonCon in Las Vegas:

The original goal was to attend NeonCon Fri-Sun. Now it has turned into doing Vegas stuff on Friday with the fiancĂ©, judging a Steamroller event on Saturday, then possibly leaving early Sunday. I want to try and squeeze more of the con in my schedule, but I’ll see how my mood swings.

Dungeon Defenders:

Got Dungeon Defenders as a birthday gift from an old friend. Been hooked since its release on Oct 19th, yet I can only play it every third night due to my busy schedule. Worse is that I’m one of the many “few” whose game progress gets lost every so often. Some bug that the Dungeon Defender folks are trying to track down where an entire gaming session doesn’t get saved and is lost. I’ve spent 2-3 hours in a single sitting looting and leveling, only to find out the next morning that it’s like the gaming never took place. Still enjoying the game and my current workaround seems to be working – quit often, shortening the gaming sessions.

League of Legends:

I’ve pretty much shelved LoL due to Dungeon Defenders, WM/Hordes painting (so proud I actually made time for that!), and wedding planning (been checking out venues). With the latest Half-Dragon melee Champ, Shyvana, birthday Riot Points from my friend, and Wu Kong buffs, I’m itching to play a few games. Sadly, tonight is my only night for gaming before I leave for Vegas, and it’ll be dedicated to Dungeon Defender’s Halloween Spooktacular event, which is expected to end while I’m out of town.

Shyvana and Wu Kong must wait until I return!

Privateer Press Insider – Throne of Everblight!

October 14th, 2011

Yesterday’s Privateer Press Insider provided us with a teaser of the Legion of Everblight’s upcoming battle engine, the Throne of Everblight!

I was never that interested in the concept art, nor the art pieces where it was pictured. In fact, I was quite disgusted. However, seeing the assembled and painted model has actually changed my mind! I’m still not digging the concept of a “magically-floating” tentacled maw, but at least it looks a whole lot better than I originally speculated.

Throne of Everblight

The Insider also provided a blank stat card:

Throne of Everblight blank stat card

1, 2, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6, 7, 9, 10, 10, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 15, 15, 19, 20, 24 are the numbers used on its stat card, with some extra numbers to throw us off.

My speculation:

SPD: 5
STR: 10
MAT: 6
RAT: 4
DEF: 10
ARM: 19
CMD: 9
3x Tentacle POW, P+S: 5, 15
Damage: 20
PC: 10, FA: 2

With 3 tentacle attacks, the 5s and 15s were obvious. That meant the STR would be 10. Field Allowance of 2 seems to be the general trend for battle engines. 19 and 20 are interchangeable between Damage and ARM. The next highest number left was 14, which would be too low for a battle engine.

SPD was a tough one because it supposedly “flies” in all the art pieces. Too fast makes it more of a melee engine of destruction, and we’ve seen the sorceress on top flinging spells, so I feel that combo would be too over-powered. So I was hovering on SPD 4 or 5. 4 allows the sorceress to balance herself (using fluff logic) and caters it to more of a support role. However, I went with 5 because I do want to see it in melee :)

MAT 6 seems to be the Legion norm, and 7 would just be too insanely high for a model with 3 initial attacks. Rumors have also said that the Throne can get corpse tokens, so if those can be used for boosting, then I’d hover back to MAT 6. MAT 5 is out because I used the last 5 for SPD.

Point Cost was a tough one. The WARMACHINE battle engines are 9 points, with the exception of the Retribution Arcantrik Generator which is 10. Given the melee and sorceress (offensive and support spells), I went with 10.

DEF 10 is the minimum, and giving this engine any more seems wrong, especially when comparing it to the other engines. That leaves the CMD with 9 since I don’t have any more 10s. Of course, I really haven’t checked the CMD of the other engines and only assuming they are 9 or higher.

RAT is a 4. I would say 1 since it has no ranged weapons, but the numbers tend to follow the RPG mentality over table-top war game function. In other words, if the model were to appear in an RPG and “what if it had a ranged weapon”, what would its real RAT be.

Lastly, I’m guessing the giant maw on the model will turn into a “Critical Consume” ability for all its melee attacks, or maybe just a simple “Snacking” ability.

I actually am anticipating this model’s release, along with the HORDES Domination expansion! I am not excited about the prices… especially after spending a fortune on an engagement ring and getting engaged last weekend ;)

Journeyman League Week #1 BatReps!

October 5th, 2011

Game #1: Scott’s Retribution

My first game was against Scott, my elementary school friend. He played some MK1, but tonight was his first few MK2 games. I helped him along, but he pretty much earned his win.

Game #2: Jackie’s Pirates

My second game was against Jackie. My record is like 0-3 against her, in the major tournaments at the cons. Jackie won initiative and let my army go first, which simply ran forward. Her pirates advanced and her Mariner plugged a hole in my Carnivean. On my turn, I saw an opportunity to go after Bart and took it.

Lylyth moved forward to feat, plug Bart with an arrow, cast Parasite (auto-hit with Witch Mark), and used my last Fury to plug him with another arrow. Carnivean walked up a few inches to put Bart in range of its 10″ spray. It missed Bart, but did tear off the Mariners cannon arm. Next was the Shredder missile. It went rabid to get the +2 SPD, then charged Bart (for free, courtesy of Blood Lure). Rolled the high damage needed to finish off Bart! Game over! Oh wait, Bart has Tough. *roll* Game over!!

Game #3: Brian’s Cygnar

We were suppose to leave at 10pm, but since Scott was busy playing a game, Brian (from The Realm) and I got in a game – Cygnar v. Legion. This too was a good game! Lots of blood spilled on the battlefield. Sadly, jacks don’t bleed so it was mostly my Legion’s.

I lose a Shredder to a sniped Charger as my army closes in. On my turn, Lylyth put a Blood Lure and Parasite on Stryker’s Ironclad. Launched a rabid Shredder missile to tie up the Ironclad. I’m fearing the Charger’s gun because it could explode Shredders and Lylyth, so I walk my Carnivean up and spray and pray, hoping to get lucky and rip off its gun arm. Miss. I run a rabid Shredder up to play with the Charger and prevent it from shooting.

Stryker casts Blur on himself, Arcane Shields his Ironclad, charges between his jacks to stab the rabid Shredder, then feats. The Ironclad has to finish it off. The Charger contemplates taking a free strike from the Shredder nipping at its feet to shoot, but instead plays fetch by throwing its mallet at the Shredder, taking out an aspect. The Lancer charges the Carnivean and inflicts 8 damage to its body. Earlier I had said that I wouldn’t need Spiny Growth that turn…

On my turn, Lylyth has to cut herself for a Fury. Upkeep Parasite to bring the Ironclad’s ARM down to 23 from 26? Nah. Shredder frenzies and rips off the Chargers gun arm. Lylyth feats, shoots Stryker with 4d6 to hit, Parasites, and shoots him again. Carnivean has the option to step out of combat to spray Stryker (15+ to hit on 4d6), but instead picks up the Lancer and chucks him over at Stryker. Sadly, Stryker is out of range of the throw, but works out in my favor. The Lancer deviates forward and lands on Stryker, the rules of least disturbance pushes Stryker closer towards my army, and he takes a bit more damage too. The Carnivean covers itself in Spiny Growth, more to provide Lylyth with Fury later.

My original plan was to launch a rabid Shredder missile at Stryker (11.5″ threat) cause I thought I could reach him. Turns out that Stryker would have been out of the Shredder’s reach if it had not been for the Lancer pushing him forward! Rules interactions like that sometimes leave a bad taste in my mouth. Sadly, the Shredder whiffs on damage, and is out of Lylyth’s control area and cannot buy another attack.

The Lancer stands up and stabs the Shredder over Stryker’s prone body. Stryker stands up to finish the job. Ironclad charges the Carnivean fully loaded with focus. The Carnivean is brought down to 2 remaining health, but the Spiny Growth shorts out the Ironclad’s cortex, removing its last point of focus. The Charger continues to play with the Shredder.

Lylyth drops Parasite from Stryker and has to cut herself for another Fury. I opt to finish off the Ironclad. I originally planned on saving two Fury to heal the Spirit and Body aspect of the Carnivean, but instead I chose to fire a boosted shot into combat (9+ needed). Missing meant that I had a good chance of finishing off my own Carnivean, but luckily I hit the Ironclad. Lylyth heals the Carnivean’s Spirit aspect and uses the remaining Fury to Parasite the Ironclad.* She then Bushwhacks into the corn fields. The Carnivean bites and claws the Ironclad, doing 1d6 damage, until the Ironclad crumples into a pile of scrap metal.

The Lancer charges the Carnivean and finishes it off. The Charger finishes off the last Shredder. Lylyth is the last remaining Legion model, so she makes a desperate attempt at Stryker’s life. She moves forward and hopes that her arrows land true. She hit the 12+ on 3d6 two turns earlier, but it wasn’t to be this time around. Her fate was left to the Charger, Lancer and Stryker.

** I thought spending 3 Fury to cast Parasite would be more beneficial than healing the Carnivean’s Body aspect. The -3 ARM is more consistent “damage”, and I would benefit from +1 ARM. In hindsight, spending 1 Fury to heal the Body mean the Carnivean would have been doing 3.5 extra damage on average. The 2 extra Fury could have been used to heal it some more, possibly giving it better chances to survive. Also, finishing off the Ironclad removes Parasite, and also my +1 ARM :P

Mini Updates for 9/30/11

September 30th, 2011

Tiny Tower: 121 floors.

Rusty Hearts: Tude level 17.

Diablo 3 Beta: Demon Hunter level 11 (gonna keep playing the beta to level up the blacksmith and see how that functions).

Atlantica Online: Just hit level 111 two nights ago. Went from 110 to 111 without fighting (mostly)! Mainly daily diary tasks and resting.

Journeyman League Legion: Carnivean partially assembled. Will probably have to “proxy” in a painted Carnivean to play with in the first week of the league. It’s like some alternate universe, where I’m required to play with unpainted models, so I have to proxy a fully painted one. This is mainly because I like to paint-in-parts, so I don’t want to fully assemble my Carnivean until I’m done painting it. Other than that, I have an unassembled Lylyth (both normal and 2011 resculpt) and 4 primered Shredders.

New list of “must see sooner than later” movies in my queue: The Lost Bladesman (2011, Donnie Yen), The Sorcerer & the White Snake (2011, Jet Li), and Shaolin (2011, Andy Lau, Nick Tse, Jackie Chan). Battle of Wits (2006, Andy Lau) *was* on my list, but I didn’t realize that I had just seen it under a different title, Battle of Warriors (courtesy of Netflix). Other movies to watch out for: Sector 7 (Korean sci-fi horror), War of the Arrows and Hindsight (only cause it stars Song Kang-ho).

Grand Prix Story: Playthrough #5. I’m trying to collect data, but it seems that my data will be inaccurate because other stuff besides “cars and parts” carry over with each playthrough – driver and mechanics’ stats, and sponsorship payments. Google spreadsheet of stats collected

Starbucks afternoon coffee

September 20th, 2011

Went to Starbucks and ordered my usual:

Venti Iced Quad Upside-down Non-Fat Caramel Macchiato (not usually spoken in that order).

The barista rings me up for $4.45, which is the base price w/o the extra shot. I smile and remind her, “you forgot the extra shot.” She smiles and says thanks as I hand her my credit card. Now the register is showing $5.95. I say, “it’s only one extra shot”. She’s like, “oh, wait…” then swipes my card again. “There you go!” Now I think we’re on two different conversation paths cause she was apparently having trouble charging my card, and I’m currently overpaying.

“Would you like your receipt with that?”

“Yes, please.” I add nothing else to the conversation and write off the extra charge as “tip”. I take a step back to examine my receipt and the Starbucks menu above my head.

My receipt says “quad $1.50″, no more “+ extra shot”.

I compare the price to the menu. They’ve split the prices for the hot and iced items. They use to be the same, but now they’re separate, with separate pricing. The iced version costs $4.65. The “quad” form should price it at $5.40.

I look over the counter and see my plastic cup, with the “4″ written on it and circled. I know they’re not going to serve me hot coffee in a plastic cup.

At this point, I’m getting that angry feeling that I should say something and correct them. It’s not about $0.55, but out of principle. However, I feel conflicted because I don’t want to be “that guy”, which only adds to the stirring in my stomach.

I open my mouth at my expense, being honest and paying more. I stay quiet at my expense, letting them get away with their mistake. So I run back to rant in this blog.

What does this have to do with gaming? I do the same thing in tabletop wargaming sort of. I allow my opponent to take back actions and mistakes, even during a tournament. I rarely ever allow myself the same, even at the opponent’s request. I’m pretty hard on myself.

Lately, having run more events as a Pressganger and not playing as many tournament games, I’m warning players that tournaments aren’t as relaxed and don’t be caught off-guard if an opponent doesn’t let you take back simple mistakes. I should be just as hard on my opponents in game so that they learn good habits, not relaxed habits. I gotta add that I’m more anal around people I know personally, versus strangers…

As for Starbucks, rant over. It’s out of my system. I’ve rationalized that this makes up for them giving me free shots and goodies in the past.

SoCal Smackdown 2011

September 12th, 2011

This is late coming, but I keep forgetting to get the official numbers from my book at home before writing this.

50-pt Steam Roller Warmachine Weekend Qualifier Faction Breakdown:

Cygnar: 6
Khador: 5
Menoth: 3
Cryx: 1
Mercs: 1
Trollbloods: 2
Legion: 3
Circle: 2
Skorne: 1
(no Retribution and Minion players)

Khador placed in 3 of the top 4 final tables, along with a Menoth player. The final table was Chuck Betts’ Khador versus Arash Shahi’s Khador, with a dramatic assassination by Chuck’s epic Sorscha’s Kayazy Assassins on epic Butcher.

Two Khador-vs-Khador games put a lot of stress and strain on Chuck, but he managed to pull through and win a spot in the Warmachine Weekend Invitational happening in October in Missouri! Arash took second, while Tom Ellenberger from Bakersfield was able to climb up to secure third for Menoth. Jason Flanzer came in 4th after recovering from an early defeat, just behind the two other players with 4-1 records.

35-pt Hardcore (40 minute rounds with 5-minute turns!) Faction Breakdown:

Cygnar: 2
Khador: 4
Menoth: 3
Cryx: 1
Retribution: 1
Mercs: 1
Legion: 2
Skorne: 1
Circle: 1

Doug Thoin held on to his Mercs’ fastest caster kill record from the very first round, until the final round when he himself was assassinated by Jason Flanzer’s Khador army.

David Henry, a good Khador player who was making more mistakes than usual at this convention, managed to secure the Executioner medal for most army points destroyed.

Mike Koizumi wasteland-themed converted Khador army won the Master Craftsman medal, selected by a panel of 3 judges. It was a tough call to make with so many other nicely painted armies!!

Winston Clark, the only Cryx player in both the Warmachine Weekend Qualifier and Hardcore, won overall with skill, some luck, and surviving against an Avatar with poor rolls.
