July updates…

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Just a quick update: Greatbears were coming along swimmingly, but then got distracted for a week.  Now I’ll be back into painting.  They just need final red highlights, some metal shine, then details: accessories.  Oh, and their arms and axes are still primered black.  Pictures available through Twitter.

Distraction above was from Atlantica Online.  Paid more money and got two 1-week licenses (which is why I felt like I had to play, to make good use of them) and a 1-month license.  I only used a 1-week license package.  Getting close to level 80 now :)  Just that I’m now at a point where the quests are pitting me against HIGHER level mobs.  Even got a game card from Target, but used it after nDoors special promotion :(  Spent like $31 in an attempt to get cool mounts.  Instead, I’m loaded with scrolls to nuke the enemies with.

Infinity’s PanOceania starter has been assembled, and the Fusiliers have been primered gray.  I should note that these miniatures are a major pain to assemble!!  I’ve been spoiled by Privateer Press’ minis (and to some credit, GW’s plastics and minis too).  Tiny, individual communications antennae?!  I can’t wait to get some Remotes and magnetize them though!!

Placed an order for more Reaper minis.  Assembled my dark elf sorceress mini for my friend to use in our current D&D campaign.  Had a little dilemma deciding between round or square bases.

Looks like there’s been a move to get some WM gaming back in from the Irvine playgroup!  YAY!

I’m suppose to draft up some rules for my special, fun “tag team” WARMACHINE event in early August.  Will get to that sometime this week…

“Uneventful” weekend…

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

… in terms of HORDES.  I glued the heads on my raptor mounts on Friday.  There was a work emergency on Saturday that had me go to the office for a few hours.  After that was whiskey time in downtown Long Beach.  A late wake up to go play a Monsterpocalypse team game.  After that I wound up at my parents’ until the late hours, after which I spent until the wee hours playing Atlantica Online.  I’m finding that I get levels fast if I stick to the main story and stop diverting from it!  My Exorcist is level 46 and has gotten 99% of all his experience from quest rewards.  Unfortunately he’s locked away again in a merc room whose license has expired.

UPS is expected to deliver my Metamorphosis and Strider UA today, so I hope they’ll leave it at my doorstep.  Unfortunately my next three weeknights are going to be busy (one of which includes D&D game night) so I won’t be able to finish up my Legion army until 2 days before the big Smackdown!

WARMACHINE MkII announced!!!

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

This weekend was uneventful.  Stayed functioning with cold medicine.  I paid money to play the free-to-play Atlantica Online.  Figured I played it so much already the money spent was worthwhile.  What pushed my hand was the need for the Teleport license.  While at it, the Health License helps IMMENSELY.  I splurged and bought some random boxes and got a mount and enough crystals to upgrade my mercs!

So, to promote the March 7th tournament I went down to the LGS.  I didn’t expect to see such a large WM gathering.  I watched a game finish and then talked to the players and store owner about the game. I’m going to try and go next week to get a practice game in.

Monday’s announcement on the Privateer Press’ website was great boon to my motivation!  I actually screamed out my excitement.  Thankfully the roommates weren’t home.  I can’t wait to see the rules and try out some games with them.  March’s No Quarter magazine is definitely something I should get.

As for my Legion army, I cleaned up two more Raptors and now have a full unit to assemble, but didn’t get to assembling them as I had planned.  Instead, I put together two Shepherds.  I put one on an inclined ledge, but she was standing too much at an angle.  So I took out pliers and a candle to give her knee a bend.  I melted her foot off and scratched up her leg, but she’s standing more vertical now.  After hearing about the Incubi on the Fell Calls podcast, I dusted off their box (gotten when they first were released) and put them on my work desk.

Oh, lastly, I plan on ridding of my WoW:Minis collection.  WM is back, and I cannot afford to keep up with two games (excluding Monsterpocalypse), and I’m gonna need some of that money back to fund Metamorphosis and all its goodies.  WoW was just a social gaming distraction anyways due ot the lack of WM/H activity of late.  Thank you Privateer Press for bringing the game back into my life.

Tired and sore from Vegas

Monday, February 9th, 2009

My neck, back and shoulders are sore from driving to and from Vegas, playing with my niece and nephews, carrying my nephew around, and playing Picross in the hotel room at night while the kids were asleep and the adults were gambling.  Vegas was fun, but I was missing the “Vegas with friends” type of trip when we walked by the night clubs and bars.  That’ll be for another day.

When I got home, I passed out.  Woke up to watch a horrible compilation of Japanese horror shorts while eating take-out, playing Atlantica Online AND gluing and basing my swamp gobbers bellows crew and farrow bone grinders!  They’re ready for priming, along with my Legion archers.  Unfortunately, it’s raining… and it’s expected to rain all week long.  That’s ok.  I don’t mind fielding a bare-metal army now.  I’m already feeling like I’ve accomplished a lot by assembling them!  UPS will be delivering the rest of my army to my door today.  I hope they leave it at the door since sometimes a signature (or note) is required, otherwise they try again the next day.  That’s all great for security purposes, but I want to come home to my new toys!

This past weekend – a failure in discipline

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

I went out Friday night, so got nothing done, even though the plan was to assemble my models so that they would be primed and ready for painting the following week.  Got home and played Atlantica Online.

I played Atlantica Online all day Saturday.  Couldn’t pull myself away after getting some new mercs, including a cheap Exorcist (4.5m on Argos, where they usually go for 6m+).  I needed some giant crystals to upgrade my mercs and heard about how best to get them – doing the beast trainer quest again.  Figured at my level that would be easy.  It was, except it was time consuming (had help too).  3am.  Sleep.

Sunday was more Atlantica Online.  Gotta finish the Witch quest and recruit her.  Now I gotta level her.  Oh, let’s kill 50 Evil Sky Spirits.  I should do that after I run out of stamina, so let’s use that up.  Let’s kill 1000 Crab Warriors.  Let’s open 90 Commodity Box [Beg] and sell the books to Goncourt.  500 mouse clicks later (from opening and exchanging Modern Book Boxes too), let’s open up 180 Artisan’s Box and mail it to my mules.  I should hire a Princess, but that will require a 4th Merc Room, which will all expire after a week.  I should spend $20 real cash to make them permanent.  I’ll pay next week.  Oh wait, it’s midnight and I should sleep and go to work tomorrow.  I’ll make a plan for Monday night, after I get back from dinner plans, which means I’ll probably sleep late again.

F*CK!?  Did I say I was going to give MMOs a chance again?  This is what happens to me.

During the weekend, I did glue my Legion archers to their bases.  What I didn’t do is get new glue, so I struggled with some old glue.  I didn’t apply basing material to their bases, so priming will be postponed until later this week, AFTER I base them.  Blah.

Giving games a chance again

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

First off, I swore off all MMOs.  They tend to lead me down unhealthy paths.  In the case of MMOs, I’m not really giving them a chance since Atlantica Online has already “sucked me in”.  What I really mean is that if I’m having fun, and it doesn’t feel like a chore or disrupting my life in unhealthy ways, then it should be okay.  It’s just about discipline.  So I’ll be committed to Atlantica Online for some time.

On another note, I should also be giving my hundreds/thousands of dollars worth of WARMACHINE/HORDES some attention and pick up the paint brush again.  That’s an “investment” wasting away and collecting dust on my shelves.  The incentive is a 750-point Steamroller tournament on March 7th :)  The goal isn’t to win the tournament – it’s to revitalize the game (and hobby) within my mind.

The perfectionist in me is already “wasting” time looking for a Rarity 0 Barefoot X in Disgaea 3.  I settled for Rarity 7 and will pump up my Lovers Cupid bow while looking for a Rarity 0 Rank 40 Bow ^_^  That way my Thief with Lucky Finger, “Solid Snake” (ya ya, Thieves are female), will have an easier time dishing out 10million+ damage to treasure chests without assistance.  Does any of this make sense to you?  Play Disgaea 3!

Uh oh, life sucked away some more…

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

Being only able to play Disgaea 3 elsewhere, I needed something for the home!  Diablo 2 got old again.  Its “revival” after the announcement of Diablo 3 saw lots of players returning for nostalgic purposes, me included.  Lots of games to join to cater to whatever level you are at.  Nowadays, they number fewer and less diverse.  It’s a fight to find a spot for those few Tristam runs to get you to level 15.  I find that the majority of the games are trades and Hell Baal runs (run by bots).  I’m not even interested in outfitting my characters anymore since the rewards have steadily declined, especially when 5-minute runs for zero rewards is a bummer for me.

Anyways, I discovered Atlantica Online, a turn-based MMORPG, via banner ad on a gaming site (while looking for Disgaea information).  Turn-based and free-to-play (F2P) was enough to get me to download the client at least.  Installed it and jumped into a very generic fantasy world with very generic fantasy music.  However, the combat system is what pulled me into the system!  It’s very reminiscent of old-school JRPGs and I really like how formations work out.  Other than that, the game is VERY linear in terms of progression and story, but I’m enjoying it plenty so far.

There’s already enough variety in the few available classes that I’ve already made 3 characters and going to experiment with a 4th (after my 1-day “delete character” standby clears).  I had a boring Swordsman main with a Archer, Rifle, Spear and Shaman team.  My cannon main with Sword, Spear and Viking front and Shaman, Monk and Rifle rear was more fun until my cannon stopped killing stuff fast, so they’re now equipping my newest team – Axe main with 2 spears front with Shaman, Monk and Rifle rear.  Ya ya, Axe main, very original, I know.
