August and early September wrap up!

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

It’s been a while.  Even my tweets have slowed down.  However, I’d like to gives props to my iPhone for making tweeting with photos easy!

Really quick list of what I’ve been up to:

- Night life socializing has slowed down considerably, which is good because I save more money.  However, I’m finding that I geek out more often nowadays :)

- Cleaned up room a bit, which lead to…

- Selling off WoW Minis.  MonPoc soon to follow… I’m intrigued by the idea of painting plastic, but there’s so much to paint already and there are other games with plastic minis that interest me more, that my friends are willing to play too!

- Finished the Great Bears of Gallowswood and they, along with the IFP, are all sharing a foam tray home.

- Finished painting my D&D figure: Mordale, the tiefling bard.  Very pink and wearing very colorful armor.  Only took 2 nights and I’m proud of my work!

- Ran a WARMACHINE/HORDES Steamroller event at Gateway 2009.  It was a success for me.  Used the “dealer dollars” I won from the painting contest to purchase some Legion models.  Was hoping to pick up Warhammer Invasion, but that won’t be out until next month.  1st in all 3 sci-fi/steampunk categories and my only fantasy entry, Mordale, didn’t win anything.

- I’m in the mood to assemble and paint again, except I spent the last two nights playing Atlantica Online.  MMOs are a disease!!!

- Finally got my first PG order, which includes the Forces of WARMACHINE faction book: Retribution of Scyrah AND my PG shirt.

Plans for the weekend include: hiking, possibly a bbq, online “comedy” traffic school, reading the Retribution book and HOPEFULLY modeling instead of video gaming.

It’s still June…

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

Parties are almost over.  Lots of parties with childhood friends, family, babies, birthdays, going aways… To come: adventuring parties and a birthday.

Haven’t gotten much done in the hobby department, but I’m teeming with ideas.  I’ve picked up to starters of Infinity (PanOceana and Yu-Jing), a couple of Reaper Dark Haven miniatures (for RPG and just painting) and assembled a couple more Khador models.  I still have the IFP to finish, but all they need are their shields (started last night) and grass on their bases.

Went to a SteamRoller 4 tournament and got 3 games in before I had to bail for a birthday party.  Faced epic Krueger twice – won two games by scenario’s tie-breaker and lost one to assassination.  It was well deserved.  Epic Krueger played aggressively and put me against the wall.  I had a great idea to assassinate Krueger (sitting on DEF21) by having my Behemoth throw his Gnarlhorn on top of him, and then walk in with my Fury’d Demo Korps under Butcher’s feat to finish the job.  Unfortunately, the Behemoth missed his boosted power attack, so the Demo Korps went to wreck a WoldWarden instead.

On Krueger’s turn, he brought Butcher down to a single point of life! (eKrueger missed 2 of his 3 attacks – one was used to finish a Demo Korps and pump his STR/ARM by 2)  If he couldn’t finish the job, Krueger would surely be dead.  His Gnarlhorn swerved around the Behemoth to finish off the Butcher, but it was so close whether the Gnarlhorn would take a free strike from the Behemoth of not.  I let him go free and basically gave him the game.  I had to leave early anyways and it was a good tussle.  WM is great that way – the dice can tumble any which way!!

SoCal Smackdown has come and gone

Monday, March 9th, 2009

This was the largest gathering of WM/HORDES players that I have been a part of, ever.  Supposedly this is the largest event in SoCal since SoCal GenCon 2006, though I believe it might have been bigger than even that.

My legs are still sore from standing all day.  My back has recovered from leaning over a table all day.  I slept in practically all day on Sunday from the mental and physical exhaustion of the event.  It was all worth it!  I got in 4 good games, met a lot of people, caught up with old friends and got to talk a lot of WARMACHINE – something I do not get to do often anymore :(

For playing with half of my army for the first time, I did pretty well going 3-1.  They were all pretty much “bad matchups”.  P+S 10 arrows don’t do much against non-living models and jacks, and my first opponent was Karchev and 5 jacks.  Concentrating fire on Karchev and above-average dice rolling (thank you eLylyth’s “signs and portents”) won me that game.

My next opponent was eDeneghra and lots of undead.  I got swamped by his army and pinned down by eDenny’s feat while losing my entire unit of Archers to her Dark Seduction.  I barely eeked out a victory by capping eDenny with my Warbeasts, who all had added range due to eLylyth’s feat.

Round 3 was against a player I face at practically every big tournament that I have been to.  eHaley nerfed my army with her Deceleration and his army made it very, very difficult to get a bead on her.  I threw all I had at a very poor attempt to bring her down.  Though my army can dish out the damage, they still need to hit without extra dice.  He did a great job of tying up my Archers to prevent them from CRA’ing effectively.

Round 4 pitted me against another Cygnar player using eStryker.  It was primarily an infantry-heavy force utilizing Cygnar’s melee units – 2x Stormblades, Stormguard, and Sword Knights.  I popped my feat the first turn to cut through a lot of his infantry, but eStryker had a Deceleration-like spell (maybe it IS Deceleration, and eHaley’s spell has a different name).  Actually ran out of time (with bonus time too) and Lylyth would only have 3 Fury for the following turn :/  Ran out of time again and Lylyth was stuck in the open with all her fury.  Stryker charged in and only hit once, which she easily transferred away.  She shot and killed Stryker easily since he had already done more than half the damage to himself (by overpowering his armor).

All in all, it was plenty of fun!  So much so that I’m “active” on many of the forums again.  Hopefully this “high” will last until next year!

Metamorphosis is in my briefcase!

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

Finally got my copy of Metamorphosis!  Also ordered were Sabol Army Transport foam trays for my new Legion army, of which I still need to finish assembling.  I was glancing through the Legion section and noting at how cool everything was.  When I started reading the Strider unit attachment, I remembered – I had also ordered them!!  I dug through the box I was about to throw out to pull out the blister.  That was a close call.  Those models are pretty cool, but they do seem larger than regular Striders.  Didn’t have any normal ones on hand to compare.

So, what’s left to assemble: 5 Raptors and a Strider UA (2 models).  I plan on using my bought-painted Striders, but if I have time, I will assemble a new unit so that my army can retain its consistent bare-metal look (unfortunately :P).

“Uneventful” weekend…

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

… in terms of HORDES.  I glued the heads on my raptor mounts on Friday.  There was a work emergency on Saturday that had me go to the office for a few hours.  After that was whiskey time in downtown Long Beach.  A late wake up to go play a Monsterpocalypse team game.  After that I wound up at my parents’ until the late hours, after which I spent until the wee hours playing Atlantica Online.  I’m finding that I get levels fast if I stick to the main story and stop diverting from it!  My Exorcist is level 46 and has gotten 99% of all his experience from quest rewards.  Unfortunately he’s locked away again in a merc room whose license has expired.

UPS is expected to deliver my Metamorphosis and Strider UA today, so I hope they’ll leave it at my doorstep.  Unfortunately my next three weeknights are going to be busy (one of which includes D&D game night) so I won’t be able to finish up my Legion army until 2 days before the big Smackdown!

Has it really been a week??

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Drama, birthday party planning, partying, bedridden illness… it’s been a long week.  I’m still sick, but I’ve been spending my evenings finishing my Incubi and finally started on my Raptors (just the mounts).  I tried to sculpt fingers on one incubus, but it just looks dreadful and non-proportionate to the rest of the model.  I let it be.

My raptor mounts were just simply glued together, with the idea that I’ll green-stuff the gaps later.  I had broken out one of my tiny clamps to hold a blighted archer upside down so that gravity would glue his broken bow shaft.  I thought, hey, I can use these to glue to mounts securely!  One mount was already drying, lying on its side to use gravity while I was struggling to find a way to make the second one snug.  Anyways, I hope to have Metamorphosis and my Strider UA in next week.  Just a week away from the tournament, and not a single drop of paint.

My left pointer finger is RAW!!

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

I assembled, mostly, my squad of 5 Incubi.  I was expecting to simply glue and base single-piece models, but no… there are 3 different sculpts and each one consists of 4 pieces!!  My finger is raw and sore from holding the tiny pieces so that I could pin them.  I gave up on pinning and just started using glue and Zip Kicker.  I will be leaving off some parts off of one of the Incubi (the Nyss arms that are falling off the corpse) and instead I’ll try to sculpt little Nyss fingers on the claws (to show that the arms are turning into the claws instead of the arms falling off while the claws are coming from someplace else).

Anyways, these little buggers are super sweet looking and will be fun to paint, granted the kneeling ones have hard to reach parts so they are not glued to their bases yet.  I had not expected such simple models to require so much work!?

WARMACHINE MkII announced!!!

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

This weekend was uneventful.  Stayed functioning with cold medicine.  I paid money to play the free-to-play Atlantica Online.  Figured I played it so much already the money spent was worthwhile.  What pushed my hand was the need for the Teleport license.  While at it, the Health License helps IMMENSELY.  I splurged and bought some random boxes and got a mount and enough crystals to upgrade my mercs!

So, to promote the March 7th tournament I went down to the LGS.  I didn’t expect to see such a large WM gathering.  I watched a game finish and then talked to the players and store owner about the game. I’m going to try and go next week to get a practice game in.

Monday’s announcement on the Privateer Press’ website was great boon to my motivation!  I actually screamed out my excitement.  Thankfully the roommates weren’t home.  I can’t wait to see the rules and try out some games with them.  March’s No Quarter magazine is definitely something I should get.

As for my Legion army, I cleaned up two more Raptors and now have a full unit to assemble, but didn’t get to assembling them as I had planned.  Instead, I put together two Shepherds.  I put one on an inclined ledge, but she was standing too much at an angle.  So I took out pliers and a candle to give her knee a bend.  I melted her foot off and scratched up her leg, but she’s standing more vertical now.  After hearing about the Incubi on the Fell Calls podcast, I dusted off their box (gotten when they first were released) and put them on my work desk.

Oh, lastly, I plan on ridding of my WoW:Minis collection.  WM is back, and I cannot afford to keep up with two games (excluding Monsterpocalypse), and I’m gonna need some of that money back to fund Metamorphosis and all its goodies.  WoW was just a social gaming distraction anyways due ot the lack of WM/H activity of late.  Thank you Privateer Press for bringing the game back into my life.

Ogling the Shadow of Everblight

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Angelius done (after 2 nights).  Deathstrider done (after 2 minutes).  Epic Lylyth done (except one arm is unattached to make painting her chest easier :P)  Lylyth is such a beautiful model with her leaping pose.  I attached mine to a cork base to simulate her leaping off a cliff edge.  Well, cliff edge it isn’t, but more like raised ground.  Oh well, I’m still very excited about getting ready to paint her.

I was retinkering with my list because I wasn’t sure that I would get the 2nd unit of Striders done in time.  Lots of questions came up: will the Gobber Bellows really help this army?  Can the Bone Grinders keep up with Lylyth?  Are 6 more Strider shots better than 10 more archers?  Should I replace them with Swordsmen instead?  What’s with this runny nose?

Well, since whatever unit I choose will be replaced by Raptors in March, I shouldn’t bother with assembling another unit of Striders and just stick with something else I have – probably the Swordsmen so that I have more of a tool box army instead of all ranged units.

The Bone Grinders are much slower than Lylyth, and the only thing they’re adding to her is 3″ to her only useful spell, making it 13″ instead of 10″.  I’ll keep them in the list for this weekend at least since I had gone through the trouble of putting them together.

The runny nose persisted this morning and I’m feeling like I’m coming down with something – I got the chills now.  Hopefully I don’t feel too ill where I cannot attend Strategicon this weekend.

Breathing in pewter dust…

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

Filed and cleaned up my Angelius!  It’s getting a boring base (due to time restraints), but it’s got numerous pins to the base, and one long pin to keep its slender upper body attached to both the lower body and base.  The wings connect pretty well, so I’ll be relying on simply glue (and putty to fill the gaps).  The glue I have (an old Citadel one) takes forever to dry, so I’ll have to break out the zip kicker tonight.  Didn’t get much else done because of errands.

While cleaning my Angelius, I was catching up on Fell Calls.  I was on episode #154 (August 2008) and they were coincidentally talking about epic Lylyth!  I learned from that podcast that her feat only affects one model/unit, and that disappointed me greatly because I had planned on taking numerous ranged models/units to capitalize on her feat :(  After cleaning up my desk, I reviewed her card (which I had just gotten) and didn’t see how her feat only affected one model/unit.  It said “models/units”.  I checked the No Quarter where she was previewed and there was the difference!  In the preview, her feat only said “model/unit”.  What a relief!

In other news, HORDES: Metamorphosis is scheduled to be released at the end of this month (2/25) instead of March!  I’ll have to make a special request to Neal at The WarStore (www.thewarstore.com) to see if he can get the goods to me by release date :D
